The Government has launched its consultation on copyright and AI.
We look forward to working with the Government and other stakeholders to respond to the consultation and to bring the full strength of the BCC’s expertise and knowledge to bear in the development of policy in this area.
Whilst we are grateful for the discussion about transparency measures and commitment to licensing solutions, we do not support the Government’s preference for the introduction of a Text and Data Mining (TDM) exception akin to that in the EU.
We do not recognise claims by the Government and Generative AI (GAI) firms that there is a lack of legal clarity in existing copyright law.
The problem that needs to be tackled is the mass scraping of copyright works without permission currently taking place which is putting creators’ livelihoods at risk. The BCC will continue to make our voice and that of the creators our members represent heard within Government.
The creative industries sector contributed £124.6 billion to the UK economy in Gross Value Added in 2022, representing 5.7% of UK GVA (DCMS, 2024) and today’s announcement risks devaluing the sector.
